Module 6.3 Ethical Issues in Social Media Use (Discussion)

Q Engage Social media use is pervasive, but many nurses and other healthcare providers occasionally do not consider the ethical responsibility they have to protect their patient’s privacy and confidentiality. Because of this, well-intentioned, but inappropriate, social media posts have resulted in serious in ethical and legal repercussions. The National Council of State Boards of Nursing (NCSBN) has developed guidelines for nurses and nursing students for using social media responsibly. Please see the NCSBN video below which reviews these guidelines and provides potential scenarios of inappropriate social media use. NCSBNInteract. (2011, December 9). Social Media Guidelines for Nurses. [Video File]. (5:44 minutes). This video is closed-captioned and has a transcript. Download transcript. Initial Discussion Post For this discussion review the readings and consider the scenarios presented in the video. If your organization has a policy regarding social media use, please address the questions below. (Do not share the name of your organization or the actual text of the policy). • Does your organization's social media policy cover the scenarios noted in the NCSBN’s video? • Were nurses in your organization involved in developing your organization's policy on social media use? If not, who developed the policy? • Did you receive training on the policy? • How should the policy be changed to address the ethical practice needs of professional nursing? If your organization does not have a policy, review one privacy policy from a social media site that you use (i.e., Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, YouTube, Pinterest, Snapchat, TikTok). Please address the questions below: • Which social media platform did you review? • Do individuals use this social media platform to share healthcare information? • Does this social media platforms’ policy address healthcare issues? • If individuals use this social media platform to share health information, how should the platform's policy change to address the privacy of healthcare information? Your initial post is due by Thursday at 11:59 PM ET.? Your responses are due by Sunday at 11:59 PM ET. Response to Classmates If possible, respond to a classmate who addressed a different prompt. For instance, if you wrote about your organization's social media policy, respond to a classmate who wrote about a social media platform's policy. Please answer the questions below: • How did the policy that your classmate addressed differ from the one that you wrote about in your initial post? How was it similar? • What do you think that health care organizations can learn from the privacy policies of social media companies and visa versa? Our organization has a social media policy that looks into protecting the client's identifiable health care information. The primary intent of the policy is to provide guidelines and rules for all health care staff working with patient identifiable health information. Hence, they carry out activities that will protect the confidentiality of patients and their best interest. In our social media policy, we are prohibited from posting any content that shows the client's personal health information on any social media platform and on our organization-sponsored websites. We are also banned from using social media platforms to give medical advice or make a commentary about any medical advice (Petersen & Lehmann, 2018).
